Do I need anything before booking a 360 excavator course?

Yes. You must have passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test within the last two years to be eligible to sit the CPCS technical test. What is the difference between A58 and A59?

A58 covers tracked 360 excavators below 10 tonnes; A59 covers above 10 tonnes (A59A tracked, A59B wheeled). Importantly, passing on an above 10 tonnes machine automatically qualifies you for below 10 tonnes too, but not the reverse. If you want the broadest qualification from one course, the above 10 tonnes route usually makes most sense.

What is a "rubber duck"?

"Rubber duck" is the common site nickname for a wheeled 360 excavator (CPCS category A59B), as opposed to the tracked version. The name simply distinguishes the wheeled machine from its tracked counterpart.

I have operated diggers for years but have no card, which course do I need?

The experienced worker route. It is shorter than the novice course because it refines and certifies existing competence rather than teaching from scratch. Can a complete beginner take this course?

Yes. The foundation and novice route is built for people with little or no experience, developing genuine operating skill before testing. Be realistic about your level when booking, attempting the shorter experienced route without real seat time usually leads to a failed test.

What card do I get, and is it permanent?

Passing the theory and practical tests earns you the red CPCS trained operator card, which lets you work. It is time-limited: to upgrade to the longer-lasting blue competence card, you complete an NVQ in Plant Operations and gain logged operating experience within the red card's validity period.

Where Every Build Actually Begins

Before you book a 360 excavator course Birmingham providers advertise, there are a few things worth understanding, because the booking page on most training sites will not tell you, and getting it wrong wastes time and money. Which category you sit (and which one covers you for the others), the CSCS test you must already hold before you are even allowed to take the test, and whether you need the novice or experienced route all change what you should book.

The CSCS Test Prerequisite

This is the single most common reason people get turned away on test day, so it comes before everything else.

To sit a CPCS 360 excavator technical test, you must have passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) test within the last two years. No valid HS&E test, no technical test, and on most courses, no refund. If you have not done this yet, sort it first. 360 Excavator Categories Explained: Tracked, Wheeled, Above & Below 10 Tonnes

The "360 excavator" is not one ticket. It splits into categories, and choosing the right one matters because of a rule most people do not know until afterwards.

Under CPCS, the categories are:

A58: Tracked 360 excavator below 10 tonnes (this is your mini excavator and midi excavator territory)
A59A: Tracked 360 excavator above 10 tonnes
A59B: Wheeled 360 excavator above 10 tonnes, the wheeled machine is known on site as a "rubber duck"

Here is the rule worth knowing: if you pass your test on a machine above 10 tonnes, you automatically qualify for below 10 tonnes as well. It does not work the other way around. So if you intend to operate larger machines, or you simply want the widest possible qualification from one course, testing on the above 10 tonnes category (A59) is usually the better investment, because it covers you for the smaller machines too.

If your work is genuinely only ever going to involve a mini excavator, the A58 below 10 tonnes route is enough. We will give you a straight recommendation based on the work you are actually heading into, not the course that is easiest to fill.

Novice or Experienced Worker: Which Route Is Yours?

Foundation / Novice course.

For people with little or no time on a 360 excavator. This is the longer route because it builds genuine operating skill from the ground up before you are put in front of a tester. If you have never operated one, this is you as a novice operator, and there is no shortcut worth taking. A tester will see through it.

Experienced Worker course.

For an experienced operator who already has real seat time but lacks the formal CPCS or NPORS card. This route is shorter because it refines and certifies existing competence rather than teaching it from scratch. If you have operated 360s on site for years but never got carded, this formalises what you can already do. We also offer refresher training for carded operators who have been out of the seat for a while and want to rebuild confidence before returning to work.
Being honest with yourself here saves money. Booking the experienced route to save a day, when you genuinely need the novice course, usually ends in a failed test and a rebooking.

What the 360 Excavator Course Actually Covers

Whichever category and level you take, competent 360 excavator operation comes down to a consistent set of skills, and a tester will check all of them:

Pre-use inspection: knowing how to check the machine over before you start, and why each check matters
Machine controls and terminology: the principal components, how the controls work, and the correct names for them, cross-referenced with the operator's manual for the specific machine
Siting the machine: positioning the excavator safely and efficiently for the task and the ground conditions
Safe operating and productive work: operating to standard while maximising efficiency, not just moving the machine
Fitting and using ancillary equipment: buckets and attachments
Routine servicing and minor adjustments: basic maintenance and recognising the machine's limitations
Preparing the machine for travel: including moving on the public highway where relevant
Loading and working to levels: interpreting level pegs, profiles and dig information
